The Virtual Library

History

The WWW Virtual Library Project was started at CERN in 1991 by Tim Berners-Lee to keep track of the development of the World Wide Web that he had just created.

Arthur Secret continued the project from 1993 on, at CERN until August 1995 (he was sponsored in his last year at CERN by RARE, that merged with EARN to form TERENA in October 1994), then on its own until December 1995, and at the W3 Consortium since January 1996.

It is in 1993 that the Virtual Library project started getting distributed, thanks to the suggestion of Lou Montulli, that pointed out we should let the subject "History" be maintained by Dr. Lynn H. Nelson at the University of Kansas.

Coordination

The WWW Virtual Library is maintained by volunteers. I try to coordinate our efforts, and to answer requests sent to www-request@w3.org

Please help us improve the Virtual Library by sending suggestions to www-request@w3.org, additions and modifications to the maintainers, and acknowledgment to vlib@w3.org if you want to maintain a particular subject.

Enjoy!

Arthur Secret (vlib@w3.org)
